holiday with children Balaton Zamárdi Mirabella Camping

A family holiday at Lake Balaton? For many parents, it may sound more like a logistical operation than a holiday – especially if you’ve never been camping with a young child. How do we fit all that stuff in and what do we leave at home? Will we be able to stick to the schedule? Will putting the kids to sleep work out? Is there ever a quiet holiday when the kids are young? Or do you have to accept the fact that the parent is not actually on holiday, just looking after the child elsewhere? These questions are perfectly valid, but there is no need to worry, family holidays don’t have to be about stress and survival.

Parents deserve a holiday too!

Mirabella Camping is the perfect setting for a relaxed, enjoyable, yet smooth family holiday. We’ve gathered some cool tricks from families that have gone before you and show you how our amenities can make things easier for you.

Whether it’s your first trip with your baby, or an adventure holiday with toddlers and schoolchildren, a camping or caravan adventure, or a comfortable holiday in a mobile home by Lake Balaton, we have the right place for you!

At the campsite, time passes differently, a little slower, more leisurely and full of meaningful moments. The tousled hair, the scent of sunscreen on the little ones, the cosy evening campfire atmosphere, and the barefoot freedom all add up to a unique kind of family happiness that nothing else can match.

1. A family-friendly accommodation is with you from the moment you start packing!

Booking your accommodation takes just a few clicks – it’s simple, quick, and hassle-free. And just like that, you can start dreaming of fresh Balaton mornings, where the kids wake up with big smiles and you sip your morning coffee or fragrant tea in peace, with the sparkling lake just a few steps away. Well, yes, but first there’s the packaging. The holidays haven’t even started yet, but you’re already facing a serious challenge. When you’re travelling with kids, getting ready for the holiday often feels more like moving house than heading off for a getaway to Lake Balaton.

A baby, for instance, needs everything they’re used to having in the safety of home – which means packing up half the house, even if you’re only stepping out for a weekend. Or maybe not? Don’t pack too much stuff and you’re free of the “we can’t fit in the car” problem.

Free baby-kit!

Cot, high chair, baby bath – we provide these, you don’t need to bring them. Don’t take up space in the car unnecessarily, as the tools you have available locally will serve you just as well as if you had brought them from home.

Let’s look at what you need for family camping and what you can safely leave at home:

Only the most important toys!

Nature, the waterfront and shared experiences keep children busy. For little ones, just one or two teething and sensory toys plus their favourite comfort blanket are enough. From the toddler stage onwards, you can bring sandbox toys, water toys, and their favourite bedtime storybook. Throw in a ball for the older ones and even for yourselves, as there are sports fields at the campsite. You can bring board games or cards, which are always fun, but it’s best not to overpack—speaking from experience, half of it usually never gets used during the holiday.

Camping in a mobile home? More space in your car’s boot!

If you are staying in a mobile home, you will be provided with a fully equipped kitchen, bed linen, towels and a hairdryer. You can confidently leave these out of your suitcase—just toss in a cheerful beach towel for splashing in the pool and enjoying the lakeside fun at Balaton!

Stroller or carrier? Think about what’s comfortable for you!

If you plan to do activities or want to manage bedtime during a lakeside walk, a lightweight, umbrella-fold stroller can come in handy. Wrap-style and buckle carriers are great helpers during hikes and outings. Did you know that waterproof baby wraps exist too? This way the little one is safe, and you can move freely in the water and supervise the big boys’ splashing around.

Mommy, can we bring the puppy? And what about the hamster?

If you have a pet, one of the most important questions when planning a holiday is: can you bring your beloved puppy? Who feeds the hamster, the cat or the bunny while you are on holiday? Mirabella Camping is pet-friendly, so you are welcome to bring your four-legged family members if you wish.

For dogs, the unique dog-friendly beach in Zamárdi awaits you at the campsite!

There are a number of useful items that provide extra comfort and convenience when camping. These should be put together depending on whether you choose a mobile home, tent or caravan site. For classic camping, you can add camping equipment, favourite cooking utensils, comfortable mats, hammocks, a few LED lanterns or string lights for mood lighting. You can also rent a camping stove and buy firewood at the reception, which you do not need to bring.

2. Choose the type of accommodation that suits you!

Happy little family in the tent

The first trip together will be a lasting memory for you and your children. The closeness to nature, the birdsong in the morning, snuggling up in a sleeping bag in the evening is an experience that cannot be experienced within the four walls. Children love that everything is different from home: eating outdoors, running around barefoot, rolling around in the grass, reading a story with a flashlight in the evening. And you can finally get out of your routine and see how simple things can make you happy.

Tip: Bring a mattress or a thicker sleeping pad for a comfortable night’s sleep and a headlamp to avoid the drama of the essential sleeping bag disappearing into the tent at night.

Camping in a caravan: it’s not a holiday, it’s freedom

Going on holiday in a caravan is like a fairytale adventure! If you have some driving experience behind you, you can rent one. Even during the journey, the kids will be extra excited as you roll around your temporary home.

The caravan offers both comfort and a real camping atmosphere. Ideal if you want your own living space but don’t want to give up all the comforts. The caravan pitches have electricity connections and the use of electricity is included in the price of the camping place. Make sure to bring an extension cord.

Tip: If your caravan has a fridge, hotplate or private toilet, book a comfort pitch. They come with water, sewage and electricity connections, so everything is really at your fingertips. And our beach pitches are literally on the beach, with uninterrupted views of Lake Balaton. A small shaded play area under the canopy can be easily created.

Mobile homes: comfort in nature

Holiday with children in comfort!

Is it important to have a fixed daily schedule, the silence of sleep, a private bathroom, a well-equipped kitchen? If you’re keen on the great outdoors, but don’t have the courage to take on a tent or caravan adventure at first, start your camping experience in a mobile home!

The air-conditioned houses could be used to cool down in the heat of summer, or heated in the spring season if necessary. You can change nappies, give the baby a bath, cook a quick pasta, vegetables and relax. A good choice for your first holiday!

Tip: You can enjoy a romantic evening on the mobile home terrace with a glass of Balaton wine while the little ones sleep soundly inside.

3. “Table, Deck Yourself!” – Camping style

A parent can easily outperform a professional caterer. It’s no different on holiday, because if your child gets hungry, it’s not a question, it’s an emergency! It’s totally understandable if you don’t want to go anywhere near the kitchen during the holidays, but it’s also understandable if simple home cooking is good sometimes! Depending on the programme, mood and personal preference, each family will find something different. At the campsite, you can take the food situation easy and comfortable.

You definitely won’t go hungry – here are the options we recommend:

  • Cooking in a community kitchen:Is your child tired of familiar flavours, or are you tempted by a homemade bacon and egg scramble? Either way, a community kitchen is a great option.

  • Restaurant, buffets, bar on site: Pancakes, lángos, classic fried delicacies, craft burgers? We have great restaurants locally, where everyone can find their favourite.

  • A grocery store at your fingertips: The local grocery store is a real treasure if you need something in a hurry – fresh baked goods for breakfast, or have you run out of fruit, or a life-saving snack? No need to get in the car, you can conveniently buy your daily essentials locally.

  • Outdoor barbecues and cookouts:Outdoors cooking and a summer barbecue are an unmissable part of a camping holiday. The campfire is crackling, the kids are running around, the big stories are being told and the smells are wafting through the air. Two in one: a great programme and good company.

  • Cooking in a mobile home? Comfortable, just like at home: The mobile homes have everything you need within reach – stove, microwave, fridge, cookware, and tableware. There is no need to compromise: if the baby eats porridge in the morning, the older one cereal, and a simple soup or a light snack at lunchtime, everything can be done simply, conveniently and calmly. You can also have lunch on your own terrace.

4. By the shore and beyond – collect memories every single day!

At Mirabella Camping you’ll find a wide range of activities that will keep the kids entertained and you won’t have to move a step. Here, you really don’t have to hurry anywhere. Of course, you can further enrich your days here with an interesting Zamárdi programme, a ferry trip or a visit to a manor.

Programmes by the shore – when you don’t have to leave the campsite

Mirabella Camping is a real family base, where everything is within the gate for a meaningful, yet relaxing holiday. You can relax on the side of our adventure pool while the kids swim, splash and slide. Mornings fly by at the playground with sandpit fun and the climbing frame, while older kids can enjoy the sandy sports court, volleyball, streetball, ping-pong, or a good game of tag—all within the safe, enclosed area of the campsite. In high season, children are kept busy with animation programmes all day long.

Best of all, it’s all right here, right on the shores of Lake Balaton. The campsite has its own private beach and beautiful panoramic views. SUP, surf rental and lessons are available locally and there is a unique dog beach in Zamárdi.

Activities beyond the coast – discover Zamárdi!

If you’re up for a little adventure with the kids, you’ll find plenty of easily accessible, family-friendly activities around Zamárdi. If you want to go cycling, you can rent bikes on site at the campsite for a little ride on Lake Balaton.

We’ve selected a few places that are within a short walk, bike ride or a few minutes’ drive, and are great fun with young children.

  • Kőhegy Lookout – 91 metres above sea level, with a breathtaking 360° panorama of Lake Balaton and the surrounding landscape.

  • Zamárdi Adventure Park – near the railway station and the M7 motorway, there are rope courses and exciting challenges for all ages in a vast area of woodland and greenery.

  • Ferry trip to Tihany – a ferry runs every half hour from Szántód to Tihany, where the peninsula’s many hidden treasures beckon. The journey time is only 7 minutes, well worth it.

  • Kőröshegy Tulip and Lavender Park – seasonal area with entrance fee during the tulip and lavender blooming season. The lavender season starts on 1 June and the fragrant hillsides await you for two months.

5. Click, “say cheese!” Holiday – don’t forget to take photos!

An essential part of a Balaton holiday is that perfect, idyllic family photo — the one where everyone is finally in the frame, and no one’s making a face (or sometimes everyone is). You need one for the fridge, one for grandma, and one for the family album. The beautiful backdrop is a given, especially in the golden afternoon light, and the pictures taken at this time of day are almost telling.

Tip: Set up the camera or phone first, take a few test shots, and only then gather the kids together.

Create your own family “say cheese!” phrase — for example, “vizibicikli” which means pedal boat in Hungarian, fits perfectly with the setting and is long enough for several clicks.

Every family has someone who loves to take photos, who notices the best moments, but never appears in the pictures, as if they weren’t even there on holiday. Change the role of the photographer sometimes. But remember, the best moments are still there without pictures.

Once you’ve captured the perfect family photo, dive into the moment. You don’t always have to pose – a little hand in the sand, a child’s laugh, a messy summer afternoon… These will be the best memories.
